Acuvue & FIDM Team Up to Make Fashion Dreams Come True

On last night’s Teen Choice Awards, millions of viewers learned about the ACUVUE® 1•DAY Contest campaign through a television commercial starring winner Shawn that featured FIDM.

A longer websiode (shown below) features Shawn, a Canadian teen whose 1•DAY Dream was to be a fashion designer, as he gets surprised by celebrity mentor Meaghan Martin with a visit to FIDM to learn about fashion design, patternmaking, and draping with FIDM Instructor Nick Verreos. “I know so many incredible designers have come out of this school,” says Shawn. “I’ve dreamed of going to this school.”

And if that wasn’t enough, Shawn was then presented with a scholarship to FIDM! “Dreams really do come true,” he exclaimed. Last night, Meaghan, wearing a dress by NIKOLAKI by Nick Verreos and David Paul, and Shawn attended the Teen Choice Awards for a star-studded evening. Other celebrity mentors for the contest included Joe Jonas, Charice, Allyson Felix, and Sterling Knight.

New iPad App Teaches Fonts in a New Way

TypographyInsight002-thumb-600x519-53263 MFA design and technology student Dong Yoon Park figured that the iPad could be a better teaching tool than the traditional  textbook for Graphic Design Students.

His app, Typography Insight (available on iTunes) displays the finest details of fonts such as Helvetica and Garamond, but allows for the manipulation of letters (unlike a book) so that students can learn the subtle differences between fonts.

"As tablet devices are designed as handheld objects, the screen is much closer to users, and they can provide more immersive experiences," says Park. ""As a beginner, it is difficult to see the subtle differences."

FIDM Alumna Launches LovingEco Website

Picture 2 FIDM Alumna Katie Bogue Miller has launched the new website LovingEco.

"LovingEco 's mission is two-part: to contribute to the movement towards a healthier planet, and give people the opportunity to be "conscious consumers." To do this we are working with innovative companies who are truly trying to improve the way products are created and will bring their products (fashion and accessories, beauty care and products for moms and children) to LovingEco members in private sales at discounted prices (up to 70% off retail). And, best yet, three percent of net proceeds will go to support an environmental or social cause.  Each week will yield new vendors with 72 hours sales beginning on Monday and Thursday, so hurry up as sales come and go!

Also, each week we will have "Tastemaker Picks," which will bring in favorite brands and tips for going green from "celebrities, entrepreneurs, designers, actors, leaders and stylish women and moms."

LovingEco has already been featured on InStyle.com.
