Q: What do you teach in the Lifestyle Presentations course?

A: We teach how to merchandise products using a lifestyle theme. Our theme last year was eco-friendly. Since so many companies don’t want to spend money to solve a display problem, we focused on re-purposing items with an eco-friendly aspect to highlight the product mix.

Q: How does a degree in Visual Communications prepare students for careers?

A: In Visual Communications, we cover a broad range of skills. Students get computer and hand-rendering skills, window display experience, public relations. Vis Comm grads have a diverse set of skills that prepares them to do lots of jobs.

Just Accepted Visual Communications Student is a Senior at Seton Hall University

Just Accepted Visual Communications Student Whitney Wood is an Orange County native who is currently a senior at Seton Hall University, where she played basketball for three years. She hopes to be an entertainment journalist or stylist after attending FIDM.

"I feel that FIDM will push me creatively in ways that no other university can. I believe that FIDM will help me accomplish my goals and aspirations. I know people who graduated from FIDM and have nothing but wonderful things to say."

Anjelique Matthews

Major: Visual Communications

Where did you go to school? I graduated the Pacific Palisades charter school in LA but when my parents were in the Navy I went to school in Japan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.

Why FIDM? I wanted something where I could express myself and I didn’t want to waste time. I’m discovering creative talents here that I didn’t even know I had.

What do you love about your major? All the classes are necessary to what I want to do in my career. I’ve already applied technical information from class to my personal life.

Future plans? I’d like to be a creative director for a magazine. I’m willing to go wherever the journey takes me.

Just Accepted Visual Communications Student Wants to Design Window Displays

Just Accepted Visual Communications Student already has a B.A. from UCLA, studied at Parsons and abroad in Florence, and has run her own calligraphy business for the last two years. She hopes to one day create window displays for retail giants such as Barneys New York or Louis Vuitton.

"In college I had interned with Event Planners, Fashion Stylists, and UCLA's Marketing Department as well as studied Art and Fashion History and Fine Art while studying abroad my Junior year in Florence, Italy. It wasn't until I came across FIDM's Visual Communications major that everything just "clicked" and I knew this was the career path for me. The field combines all of my creative interests and I couldn't be more excited!"

Visual Communications Student Wants to be a Creative Director

Junior high school student Regan Gillotte hopes to one day work as a Visual or Creative Director for a company that she loves. After seeing FIDM Instructor Ron Pastucha's work for a recent Locale OC magazine photo shoot, Regan solidified her decision to be student at FIDM. The San Clemente resident will attend the Orange County campus in 2013, studying Visual Communications.

" The environment at FIDM seemed a perfect fit from my first visit. I have never seen a school so dedicated to helping its students succeed. FIDM is the only school I found with  the perfect educational tools to help me succeed in this industry."

Visual Communications Students Take Study Tour to NYC

Last week, a group of FIDM Visual Communications Students took a Study Tour to New York City, which included visits to showrooms and retail flagships. VMSD Magazine wrote an article about their appointment with Saks Fifth Avenue's Senior VP of Visual Merchandising and Store Design Harry Cunningham (a FIDM Advisory Board member) and his team, at the famed flagship store.

"The panel – which included Matt Reed, vp, visual merchandising; Richard Fosdick, director/visual for women’s, men’s, kids and home; and Adam Carmichael, director of store design (who was also named the PAVE Rising Star 2011 two day earlier) – was extremely hospitable and open with the students. They shared their career paths, missteps and advice for getting a dream job."

Vis Comm Students Visit Macy's on NYC Study Tour

A personal tour of the Macy's holiday windows? Yes, please! Paul Olszewski, Visual Merchandise Director of Windows and Interiors at Macy's, gave FIDM Students a tour of his award-winning windows.  It was just announced last night at PAVE (Planning and Visual Education Partnership) that he and his team won the first place platinum award for best holiday windows. Congrats, Paul!
