FIDM Alumna Emily Factor Shows Downtown

Picture 1Racked LA has a report on FIDM Alumna and designer Emily Factor's runway show/installation held Downtown as part of LA Fashion Week.

"Emily Factor's look could be described as sophisticated wood-nymph. To call it boho would be to do her work a mighty disservice. She works with whimsical prints that are both ethnic/tribal and possibly inspired by Middle Earth, but most of the pieces are well-tailored and fitted -- not a kaftan in the bunch. At their very best, with their exquisite tailoring, interesting details and unabashed femininity, the clothes remind us of recent seasons of Miu Miu or Christopher Kane. She's already in stores like Les Habitudes; prices range from $270 for a blouse to $1,200 for gowns."

Fashion Design Grad Shows Collection in L.A.

Picture 1 Recent Fashion Design Alumnus Wes Hatem recently featured his latest designs at SalonOnMain in Downtown Los Angeles. "My direction for the show was to put together contemporary sportswear looks that were simple, yet dynamic," says Wes, who previously had a business creating custom made garments for a diverse clientele.

While at FIDM, Wes met Sandra Garratt, who was his Business of Fashion Instructor. "From first volunteering at her fashion show, I became her intern. This position evolved into a design and production assistant, with my most notable work being the soft torn t-shirts I designed that are being sold at Sandra's company Silvr Lining," he adds. "My current position with her is a freelance designer, still creating the soft torn tees."

The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica was the venue for the glamorous fundraiser featuring the work of 10 top Fashion Design Students and five Theatre Costume Designers. This year’s theme for theatre design “Carnivale in Rio,” inspired a breathtaking procession of samba-swirling models in 40 brilliant and outrageous costumes.

Inspiration for the Fashion Design students was global, with collections drawn from Paris, Russia, Manhattan, Japan, and Hollywood and materials ranging from silk chiffon and wool to sustainable cotton, wood, concrete, and grass. The collections focused on eveningwear, knit, active, street, and children’s wear.

“Chairing Styles,” the collaboration with Cotton Board/Cotton Inc. now in its fifth year, showcased the work of 30 students in three disciplines—Textile, Fashion, and Interior Design. Students, who were awarded $20,000 in scholarships, created ten sets of original matching garments and chairs with original textile designs.
