As part of Downtown L.A. Fashion Week's Emerging Designers Showcase, two FIDM graduates -- Phong Hong and Fernanda Carneiro -- showcased their spring 2010 collections. The L.A. Times noted that Phong's Femme Noir collection was "primarily blush with delicate black accents such as bows and thin ribbon belts." Meanwhile Fernanda was "clearly feeling upbeat and optimistic, with sunny, floral fabrics and kicky day dresses."

Brazilian native and Merchandise Product Development alumna Fernanda Carneiro worked in production and design for major fashion labels like BCBG before striking out on her own in 2008. Fernanda (above in pink) was recently announced as one of the winners of The Los Angeles Emerging Designer Competition presented by The City of LA, the Department of Cultural Affairs, and Downtown LA Fashion Week, where she will show her collection. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was on hand for the exciting announcement.

FIDM Alumna Niki Shadrow recently produced and styled "The Bash of All Bashes," a charity event in support of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Play Therapy Fund held at Beverly Hills' famed Crustacean restaurant, and FIDM Students served as dressers for the fashion show from Fred Segal Fun.
"This was one of the best experiences I had volunteering for a fashion event while at FIDM," says student Eunice Oh. "It was a pleasure!" The charity event was hosted by Rumer Willis (at right) and featured a special performance from Nikka Costa and DJ Steve Aoki.
Next month, the Celebrity Caribbean Golf Invitational, which is held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, will get an injection of style. In addition to celebrity guests and honorees, participants for the Fashion Show component include Alexander McQueen, Converse for John Varvatos, Walter Baker and FIDM Graduates House of Howe by Jade Howe (at right), Dena Burton, Michael Herrera's M...The Movement, and Jene Fuchs' Thomas Wylde.

Fashion Design Grad Jade Howe has debuted his Fall 2009 fashion show at Fashion Week Palm Desert and you can watch it by clicking here! Jade's label Howe, which was founded in 2001, is a favorite of musicians such as MGMT, Franz Ferdinand, Linkin Park, and David Cook.
FIDM Grad Yotam Solomon's fall 2009 runway collection full of curve-hugging dresses was well received by the fashion media, but L.A. Weekly took things further, putting a look from the grad's line on its cover!
Yotam's show, which was part of BOXeight Downtown, was attended by Alumna and fashion journalist Niki Shadrow, who wore one of his pieces while sitting in the front row. "Everyone loved the dress and wanted to buy it off of me," said Niki. "I will be covering his show for all my columns and will be pulling some dresses for upcoming shoots."
Fashion Design Alumna Corinne Grassini, the Los Angeles-based designer behind the Society for Rational Dress, was recently profiled in California Apparel News. The story discusses Corinne's new endeavors and her spring 2009 partnership with Barneys to produce a private-label line, Society for Rational Dress Exclusively for Barneys. Society for Rational Dress was one of three labels who helped to kick off L.A. Fashion Week last Friday night with GenArt's event at BOXeight. Corinne's fall collection featured soft, creamy knits, Grecian-inspired gowns, and even a chain-and-leather breastplate over a sweet ivory sweater dress. Red carpet master and beloved L.A. designer Kevan Hall, who was a fixture in the Main Tent at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, is premiering his fall collection as part of a charity event with The Colleagues, benefiting The Children's Institute. "It was always exciting to show my collection at Smashbox Studios with IMG," Hall explains. "But I think it will be great to see the various creative ways that designers will present their collections in the future. L.A. fashion is a viable force."

Twenty-one-year-old FIDM Alumna Jen Awad just celebrated her first BOXEight runway show at the historic Los Angeles Theatre on Saturday night and the L.A. Times was there. The edgy fall/winter collection, entitled "Flamenco Rock," featured ruched dresses with black and gold lace insets, shift dresses and oversized buttons. You can read the rest of the story here.
