FIDM Alumna Lourdes Garcia is Featured On Denver Fashion Beat

FIDM Alumna Lourdes Garcia is the designer behind the Denver-based Lourdes Rios brand. Denver Fashion Beat has a fantastic story on Lourdes and her artisanal label.

"Once upon a time, a girl name Lourdes learned to construct garments while watching her cousin cut and sew without a mannequin, her hands instinctively moving through fabric and trimmings as if they had a mind of their own. And so Lourdes decided to go to design school. Being the daughter of immigrant parents in Los Angeles, her father opposed such an idea and tried to dissuade her from such a fanciful, seemingly fruitless idea. But the design bug had bitten her too deeply, and she enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles to perfect the trade she learned at her cousin’s knee. And thus, one of Denver’s most promising designers evolved."

Leanne Marshall and Juicy Couture Featured in Elle Magazine

FIDM Alumna and "Project Runway" winner Leanne Marshall is featured in a wonderful article in the February issue of Elle. The designer dishes on her T.V. time and the story even mentions her alma mater!

In the same issue, is a story that covers the opening of the new Juicy Couture store on Fifth Avenue in New York, the mega label that was co-founded by FIDM Grad Pamela Skaist-Levy! -- Victoria

FIDM Grad Joie Rucker, Co-Founder of label Rich & Skinny, Mentioned in WWD

FIDM Alumna Joie Rucker, Creative Director and co-founder of the two-year-old jeans label Rich & Skinny, got a mention in WWD recently on the occasion of the launch of Rich & Skinny's men's line of designer denim, to be called Rich.

“We wanted to offer all the luxury and sexiness of the women’s product, but with a really masculine feel and look,” said Rucker. “These are clean, super-comfortable jeans at a great price.” That price is said to be about $200.

Rucker, a veteran of Guess and Levi Strauss, co-founded Rich & Skinny with Michael Glasser, co-founder of premium jeans lines Seven for All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity.--Belissa

FIDM Footwear Design Program Grads' Shoe Featured in December Vogue Magazine

The model in the photo at left is wearing a pair of sandals designed by FIDM Footwear Design Program Grads Cherise Angelle and Nicole LaFave from their Omelle (ähm' elle) line. 

Here's a snippit from their site:

FIDM Makes World Trade Magazine's "Fabulous 50" List!

FIDM is featured in World Trade Magazine's special annual "Fabulous 50" issue, alongside the Hershey Company,  Sun Microsystems, and Mozilla's Firefox in a list of "the companies, people, and places who are moving the global trading community forward." The industry magazine writes of FIDM: "...the college is keenly aware of what kinds of courses and experiences graduates need to hit the ground running. At FIDM, they recognize that educating a new generation of fashion students calls for just as much emphasis on global sourcing, manufacturing, and supply chains as strutting your stuff down the runway." FIDM Grad Uses Lottery Win to Fund Dream Business

When FIDM Apparel Manufacturing and Management Grad Vani Kumar hit the jackpot--literally--she used the $286,665 to bring the detailed business plan she'd just created to life. Amazingly, her winnings came within $200 of what she needed to start The Suit Closet, a downtown Los Angeles shop filled with--you guessed it--suits.
