FIDM Student Gets Summer Internship at Armani in Beverly Hills

The Giorgio Armani store in Beverly Hills has placed FIDM Students with internships for more than six years in the Entertainment Industry Public Relations Department, which is led by Senior Director and FIDM Advisory Council member Greg Nise. This year, Greg worked with the store manager to create an internship for the boutique side of the business, with an emphasis in retail management and operation support. Merchandise Marketing Student Megan Boyer has been selected for the summer quarter! She'll learn about the processing of goods and how they are distributed into the store. The history of Armani and a review of the different brands will be discussed, followed by product knowledge, merchandising, and working with buyer's reports. Congratulations, Megan!

FIDM Students Re-Interpret Dorothy's Ruby Slippers

KaddieLam As part of a design competition to re-interpret Dorothy's iconic ruby slippers in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, 12 Footwear Design Students created sketches for The Ruby Slipper Collection.

Winner Kaddie Lam will be flown out to New York City in September for a charity auction at Tavern on the Green that will benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The winner and three finalists' sketches were recently displayed in the FIDM Museum and Galleries.

Cookie Johnson Launches Denim Line With Help of FIDM Alumna

Cookie_johnson-cj-jeans Cookie Johnson, wife of sports icon Magic Johnson, has launched CJ by Cookie Johnson, a premium denim line. Frustrated when she couldn't find jeans to fit her body type, Johnson teamed up with Michael Glasser and FIDM Alumna Joie Rucker, who are the dynamic duo behind Rich & Skinny Jeans. You can read more about the new label here. The line, available in sizes 24 to 38, debuts at Nordstrom this summer and will arrive at Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus in the fall.

Industry Expo at FIDM Los Angeles

This week, FIDM Students and corporate representatives from top companies such as Hot Topic, Guess, Wet Seal, Vans, and Saks Fifth Avenue, came together for the annual Industry Expo at the L.A. campus. The career fair gives upcoming FIDM Grads and Alumni the opportunity to network with industry reps, discuss career options, and gather information. "The Industry Expo gives students a place where they can network at one given time with 25-plus companies and meet with their representatives, learn about different careers, cultivate internships, and create resources for when they do graduate," says FIDM Career Advisor Eliza Kitsinian.

Celebrity stylists gave students and alumni an inside look at the business in this fascinating panel, hosted by FIDM. Tanya Gill (she’s dressed Hilary Swank and Kate Winslet), George Kotsiopoulus (Style Director of C Magazine), and assistant to top stylists Renelou Pandora were the special guests. Margaret Schell of SPR, who has represented and produced fashion shows for such designers as Badgley Mischka, Norma Kamali, and Vivienne Tam, among others, moderated the event.

TOMS Shoes Visits FIDM

TOMS Shoes visited FIDM last Wednesday, holding a trunk sale and giving a presentation in the FIDM Museum & Galleries.  TOMS Shoes is more than just a shoe company--they're also a humanitarian effort. For every pair of shoes sold, TOMS donates a pair to a child in need. They sold over 70 shoes at the FIDM event! Students also had the chance to mingle and talk with everyone involved.

IMPD Program Partners with Tarrant Apparel Group

Tarrant Product Development Grads accepted into FIDM's intensive nine-month International Manufacturing & Product Development Program are going to be working closely with Tarrant Apparel Group. Students will travel the globe to identify trends, develop styles, and source materials for Tarrant, a private label clothing company that owns trendsetting brand American RAG CIE and supplies clothing to major apparel companies including Macy's, J.C. Penney, and Chicos.

Several hundred fashion fans, along with California Senator Dianne Feinstein, FIDM Director Norine Fuller, San Francico Mayor Gavin Newsom, Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, California 09019j_inaugural_fashion_show_FI_090118_131811 congressman Jim Costa, and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, turned out for a Sunday afternoon fashion show at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington DC for The Presidential Inaugural Luncheon and Fashion Show.

Emceed by FIDM Grad and Instructor Nick Verreos (Project Runway), the annual event was hosted by the California State Society of Washington, DC and FIDM. Guests were treated to runway selections from FIDM Grads such as Verreos, Leanne Marshall, and Kevan Hall

Scholarships From Cotton, Inc. For FIDM Students Only!

Be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime scholarship opportunity!

We are excited to announce that Cotton Incorporated has awarded us $30,000 in scholarship donations to give to a handful of dedicated, innovative, and eager-to-learn students!

FIDM has been given the challenge of picking a select number of students to participate in one of two programs in which the students will be required to think outside of the box, while creating, developing, and producing their own designs.

At the end of both projects, a total of FOUR $5,000 scholarships and ONE $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to the winners!

These projects are open to ALL MAJORS!

The project start date will be August 1, 2008 and will run until December 10th, 2008.

You can pick up the application in Room 201E or in Room 201, Desk #5.

All applications are due NO LATER THAN MONDAY, JULY 28TH, 2008.

Over 300 representatives from 180 top companies such as Burberry, Ed Hardy, BCBG, Zara, and Old Navy reviewed the portfolios of FIDM Students at FIDM's popular Portfolio Days series on the Los Angeles Campus. Many of the companies present at the event currently have FIDM Students and Graduates on their staff and were enthusiastic about the opportunity to see the work of current students. We've already heard of several interviews that are taking place as a result of the event. This is just one of many great career events held at FIDM. Find out more in our Career Center. --Kim
