FABULOUS! Exhibition at FIDM Museum & Galleries

FABULOUS! Ten Years of FIDM Museum Acquisitions, 2000-2010 is opening on September 13, 2011 at FIDM's Museum & Galleries. This exhibition will showcase an unprecedented array of dress and textile objects from FIDM's collection.

FABULOUS! celebrates the past decade of collecting at the FIDM Museum in Los Angeles. With a surge in extraordinary donations and purchases between 2000 and the present, the FIDM Museum collection has attained new eminence and richness, particularly in the areas of 19th– and 20th–century haute couture, mid–20th century American designers, and international contemporary designers.

The exhibition includes 175 donated and purchased garments and accessories worn by women, men, and children spanning 1800 to 2010. FABULOUS! highlights include: a white gauze French empire gown, a luxurious embroidered court suit worn by Austrian composer Johann Hummel (1778–1837), a Redfern court gown from 1907, and an Alexander McQueen couture gown from Fall/Winter 2008–09.

Exhibition categories include French Haute Couture, International contemporary designers, and Mid–20th century American designers. The exhibition catalogue (pictured) is for sale in the FIDM Museum Shop.

FIDM Museum & Galleries and FIDM Museum Shop Host Two Events

On Thursday, August 11, 2011, FIDM Museum Shop presents Pearls: The LBD of Jewelry, a presentation and trunk show from Hilary Beane Design. The presentation and Q&A with the jewelry designer is from 12:30pm to 1:30pm, while the trunk show is from 1:30pm to 5:30pm.

Later that evening, FIDM Museum & Galleries hosts a free summer panel, Defining Style: A Conversation With Stylists. Held in Room 500 of FIDM's Los Angeles campus, the panelists include Kendrick Osorio, Jean Getson, Melissa Chataigne, and moderator Jane Seward from California Apparel News.

Light refreshments will be served in the Museum foyer at 5:30pm). The panel discussion is from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Please RSVP at rsvp@fidmmuseum.org.

FIDM welcomes all 2011 and 2012 accepted students to join us for our Summer Open House on August 13, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at any of our four California campuses. Meet faculty, current students, and alumni plus experience the creative vibe and get a feel for campus life.

"Little Black Dress" Exhibition at FIDM Museum & Galleries Opens Today

The FIDM Museum & Galleries' latest exhibition, LBD: An Homage to Breakfast at Tiffany’s, showcases exceptional contemporary examples from Graduates such as Kevan Hall, Monique Lhuillier, Chan Luu, Marlene Stewart and more. A 1940s' Christian Dior piece and other examples from the FIDM Museum’s permanent collection will provide an opportunity to explore the wide range within this design ideal.

 Exhibition highlights include:

• -A line-for-line re-creation of Audrey Hepburn's iconic LBD, on loan from Hubert de Givenchy Couture.
• -Rip-away dress by Marlene Stewart, 1994, worn by Jamie Lee Curtis in the James Cameron film, True Lies.
• -True Blood, Latex dress collaboration between True Blood Costume Designer Audrey Fisher and Syren Couture, worn by Kristin Bauer van Straten as Pam in the HBO series. Illustration by Imogene Chayes (FIDM Graduate).
• -Alias, little black dress worn by Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow, in the ABC TV show. Costume designed by Laura Goldsmith.
• -Christian Dior cocktail dress, c. 1949 (Loan courtesy of Linda Plochocki)

 

Accompanying the dresses are illustrations from FIDM Students. Costume Design students will present their new looks for the Holly Golightly of 2012, and Fashion Design students will display the latest interpretations of the epitome of chic.

LBD: An Homage to Breakfast at Tiffany’s opens June 15th and will run through August 13th, Tuesday–Saturday 10am–4 pm. The installation is free and open to the public. A special, free lecture series will be announced.

True Grit Actress Hailee Steinfeld Visits FIDM Museum

Actress Hailee Steinfeld visited FIDM this week and toured the 19th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition. The costumes that she wore as Mattie Ross in the film True Grit are on display, along with costumes from over 20 movies from 2010.

Tomorrow, April 30th, is the last day to see the exhibition. It's open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Mad Men Costume Designer To Visit LA Campus

Janie Bryant, Costume Designer of Mad Men and Deadwood, will be visiting FIDM’s LA Campus on Wednesday, February 16. FIDM Students can take part in a Q & A with the Emmy Award-winning designer and discuss the process behind her character-defining, refined retro styles. Janie will be speaking in the Annex, Third Floor Media Room, at 12:00 noon. Afterwards, she will be signing her book, The Fashion File: Advice, Tips and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men, in the foyer of the FIDM Museum Shop. A perfect lunchtime for Film & TV Costume Design Majors!

 

FIDM Hollywood Exhibition Featured in L.A. Times

The L.A Times has a report from Saturday's preview of "The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" exhibition, which is now open to the public. On view are more than 100 costumes from 21 films, including Alice in Wonderland, True Grit, The King's Speech, and The Tempest, among others. 

Re-Designing History Exhibition Opens In FIDM Museum

The FIDM Museum launched their latest exhibition with an opening party last night. Redesigning History: FIDM Museum Study Collection, 1850-2000 showcases more than 30 fully dressed mannequins, along with accessories and related ephemera, from the FIDM Study Collection. An educational resource for students and researchers alike, the Study Collection is comprised of over 2,000 objects.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the FIDM Museum held a design competition for currently enrolled FIDM Students to re-design history by creating illustrations inspired by a key piece from the Study Collection. The winning illustrations are also on display in the Museum.

FIDM's T.V. Costume Exhibition Features Costumes from Glee, True Blood, The Tudors & More

FIDM recently held an opening for their annual Art of Television Costume Design exhibition, which features the costumes from some of T.V.'s most popular shows, including Emmy® Award-nominated The Tudors, Mad Men, Return to Cranford, Glee, and The Good Wife.
