Vintage Fashion Expo in Santa Monica this Weekend

Calling all FIDM vintage fashion fanatics! The Vintage Fashion Expo featuring 85 dealers of vintage clothing, accessories, and textiles takes place this weekend, February 4 and 5 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. For the $10 admission fee, wander racks of treasures going back to the 1850s, including classics from Chanel, Schiaparelli, and Lanvin, and American designers Halston and Claire McCardell. Bring your student ID and enter for free on Sunday.

FIDM SF to Host FASHION+TECHSF Career Workshop

2852847945-2FASHION+TECHSF presents Mentors & Apprentices, a career workshop and a networking event for the fashion, technology, and creative industries in the SF Bay Area. Business owners who work in fashion, marketing, technology, art, and design related professions will introduce their businesses and/or products, explain what they do, discuss their industry challenges and the nature of their internship opportunity, followed by a Q&A session. Mentors will then be available to meet and interact with participants and for additional informational interviewing.

Students, entrepreneurs and those interested in additional career options are highly encouraged to attend. Internship opportunity and requirements are determined by each mentor and will vary. Resumes recommended.

Fashion 5.0 Magazine Visits FIDM San Diego

FIDM San Diego recently welcomed Fashion 5.0 Magazine for an on campus presentation. The local magazine put together a short video clip of the visit.

 

Blogging Panel Next Week at FIDM SF

On Thursday, February 2, 2012, from 6pm to 8pm, five savvy bloggers and online media specialists will share their expertise for "Why Blog? Ask Experts How to Amplify Your Online Presence" at FIDM San Francisco. Bloggers include Adelle McElveen of FashionistaLab.com, Erin Hagstrom of CaliVintage.com, Ashley Gustafson of FashionablyAshley.com, Lorraine Sanders of SFIndieFashion.com, and Sinead Norenius of iFabbo.com.

The panel is open to FIDM Students and Alumni, and the general public. A networking session and refreshments will follow.

FASHION+TECHSF Fashion Business Workshop Tonight at FIDM SF

Fashiontechsf01192012teaserflierThis evening, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at FIDM San Francisco's 5th floor Conference Room, there will be a workshop, "Applying Mobile Tech Strategies for Your Fashion Business," hosted by the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance, Inc. and FASHION+TECHSF. Tickets are $10 here or at the door.

Learn how to create or apply mobile apps and do integrated marketing. The three-hour workshop and social mixer is a great opportunity for emerging designers, small business owners, app developers, and students. Stylematic, ShopNear.me, and Manpacks are a few of the participating companies.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Paula Patton Wear FIDM Grad Lhuillier to Golden Globes

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar chose a voluminous Monique Lhuillier blue and white tie dye gown with a structured bodice and full skirt to the 2012 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night in Beverly Hills. She told reporters that her two year-old had a hand in picking out the winning look. Lhuillier, a graduate of the fashion school FIDM, has designed red-carpet and wedding gowns for many top celebs, include Angelina Jolie.

Mission Impossible star Paula Patton brightened up the red carpet in a strapless, ruched canary yellow fit and flare style gown from the designer, who is a Graduate of FIDM. Pre-show reports already favored Patton as one of the evening's best dressed.

Olivia Wilde Turns Heads in Gown by FIDM Alumna Monique Lhuillier

Olivia-wilde-23rd-annual-palm-springs-international-film-festival-awards-05Actress Olivia Wilde attended the 2012 Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala last weekend in Monique Lhuillier. The beautiful black gown featured a lace back and criss-cross detailing.

Grad is a Finalist for Fashion Group International's Rising Star Awards

Picture 1The Fashion Group International named FIDM Grad Steven McDermott, the designer behind Stevie Mac New York, a Rising Star finalist in the women's ready-to-wear category for its 15th annual Rising Star Awards. Designer Ralph Rucci will present the award at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City on January 26, 2012.

Winners Announced for the Pasadena Magazine FIDM VisComm Competition

FIDM displays 057(2)For the second year, FIDM Visual Communications Students were recently challenged by Pasadena Magazine to create visual displays in four Pasadena stores (Macy’s, Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble, and the Pasadena Convention Center), with the theme of “Reasons to Love Pasadena”. 

Photographs of all four teams’ designs are featured in the December 2011 issue the magazine and the winning team’s installation will be featured in the magazine in January 2012.

The members of the winning team, Sasha Lewis, Megan Sveum, and Dylan Thomas each won $500, for a total of $1,500 in cash and prizes. Their design of stacked suitcases was at the Pasadena Convention Center, celebrating travel and tourism in Pasadena. Their victory was announced at a reception at Macy’s Pasadena, where the 2012 Tournament of Roses® Rose Queen & Royal Court were the models in an Eileen Fisher fashion show.

The judging panel was comprised of Brian Dyches, International President of the Retail Design Institute; Daryn-Reid Goodall, a nine-time Emmy nominee and current Set Decorator for Disney’s Shake It Up!; and Timothy Opsomer, Vice President of Visual Merchandising and Store Planning for MGM Resorts International.

Business Management Alumna Speaks to Students at OC Campus

11244j_Alisia Carrera_DSC_9482Business Management and Merchandise Product Development Alumna Alison Carreon recently returned to FIDM to speak to students at the Orange County campus. She talked about landing internships with The Donegar Group, a trend forecasting company, and Saks Fifth Avenue while still in school. "One of the most valuable lessons FIDM instilled in me is that we live and work in a world that revolves around truly connecting with people," she explains. "Returning to FIDM to interact with the Premier Product Development students at the OC Campus was a wonderful and rewarding experience."

After graduation, Alison worked for Forever 21 and was then recruited back to The Donegar Group to work as a Market Analyst. She then reconnected fellow FIDM Alumna Amy Nicole Bernstein, who is the co-founder and stylist for Wardrobe Wear. Alison and Amy have partnered with Rebecca Jonah to launch an exciting digital fashion community, Wear to Click, coming in early 2012.
