FIDM Alumna Behind "LA Pretty" Blog

Covering beauty and health, fashion, shopping, dining, nightlife, and home, FIDM Alumna Amy Rebekah Gan has her hands full with the webzine LA Pretty. She started the blog with her colleague Nicole back in December '08 and the duo has since been invited to local fashion shows, beauty events, store openings, and top spas. "We love Los Angeles, fashion, and beauty so we combined these themes," Amy says. "Our readership has snowballed and we're finding that we get readers from all over the world who want to know hwat's going on in the vast metropolis that is L.A.

FIDM Alumna M'chel Bauxal Makes Up Dakota Fanning

For the last 14 months, FIDM Alumna and celebrity makeup artist M'chel Bauxal has been working on the new animated film Coraline, which is a 3-D, stop motion, animation film. Why would an animated film need a makeup artist? M'chel has made up the cast and crew for various publicity, including electronic press kits, DVD footage, and for the web.

Dakota Fanning, shown here with M'chel, voices the main character in the film, which opens on Feb. 6!

Beauty Entrepreneur Poppy King Visits FIDM's LA Campus

08222j_Alumni_Beauty_Mixer_with_Poppy_King_016 Last week the FIDM Museum Store hosted the inimitable beauty biz entrepreneur Poppy King for a reading of her book Lessons of a Lipstick Queen: Finding and Developing the Great Idea that Can Change Your Life. Later that evening, Poppy joined FIDM Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing Grads for a networking event. 

Poppy launched her lipstick line at age 18 and successfully pitched it to buyers at the high-end department store Barney's, which still carries her products. Just launched: a gorgeous lip stain with the moniker Medieval and Black-Tie Optional, a shade inspired by sheer black stockings. --Kim

Lauren Conrad Makes Her "Mark"

FIDM Merchandise Product Development major and The Hills star Lauren Conrad made the cover of the Los Angeles Times' Image section yesterday.

Her challenge: to put together a fabulous outfit from the Fashion District's Santee Alley for $100.

(The Alley, a local bargain mecca, is just blocks from FIDM's L.A. campus.)

Clever Lauren was able to put together TWO outfits! Read how she did it.

If you didn't already know, Lauren's been signed as the first spokesperson for Avon's youth-oriented Mark line of cosmetics, and her own line of clothing will launch at LaurenConrad.com September 15th before hitting stores.
