FIDM Trendwatch: Are Unisex Fragrances Dead?

Ck_shock_bottlesFragrance designer and FIDM Instructor André Barnwell is our guest beauty blogger, reviewing fragrances and reporting on fragrance trend for FIDM's FashionClub.com Blog.

André says...

Are unisex fragrances dead? Well, maybe—according to Calvin Klein’s newest release CK one Shock for her. That’s right—for her. This is definitely not for the guys.

It comes in an all-white bottle with pink and black lettering. For some reason it reminds me of Betty Boop.

Top notes include passion flower, pink peony, and poppy flower. Middle notes of chocolate, blackberry, narcissus, and jasmine. Base notes of amber, vanillin, patchouli, and musk. CK one Shock is an eau de toilette, which is a lighter strength fragrance. But it does come in a body lotion, that when worn together should increase its staying power.

CK Shock for him has notes of mandarin, cucumber, Red Bull accord, pepper, cardamom, tobacco, musk and patchouli.

André Barnwell is a fragrance designer and instructor at FIDM who teaches Fundamentals of Fragrance in the Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing Program.

Just Accepted Beauty Student Feels That She Belongs at FIDM

34810_1361546338469_1825907853_668343_1363982_n Just Accepted Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing Major Student Gabriella Mary Blandino-Vasquez is a passionate soccer player at Palm Springs High School, but she has been battling skin conditions that have been frustrating and costly. With the help of her Admissions Advisor Kellie Peterson, she chose her major and cannot wait to attend FIDM.

"Honestly, I am excited to know that my first classes will be those that will spotlight my chosen major right away. I am so tired of all the required high school classes that I find myself losing interest in going to school at all. Now, I have found a new excitement knowing that when I do start my college classes, they will be new and exciting and not your typical college English and History classes. I am also excited to explore my artistic abilities, and I feel at FIDM I will be able to do that."

Just Accepted Beauty Industry Student Runs Her Own Production Company

Alexis Dyer, Indiana native and Just Accepted Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing Student Alexis Ginn has a passion for all things beauty. Known among her friends as the "Makeup Magnet," Alexis is already a successful makeup artist and runs a production company that produces events.

"I was first introduced to FIDM by my father’s friend who lives in California. He highly recommended the school. FIDM’s website immediately grabbed my attention. After researching the school I discovered it really does have a lot to offer its students. The next step was to fly out to California and check out the FIDM Los Angeles campus, where I fell in love. During the school tour I was able to see projects from current students and was blown away at how fantastic and creative their work was. This only made me more eager to see how far I could advance by attending FIDM."

FIDM Grad Starts Gift Soap Business

Jing

FIDM Beauty Industry Merchandising and Marketing Grad JingJing Wang started her company producing handmade, eco-friendly, cold processed gift soaps a year after graduation. She visited the LA Campus to speak to a class in Entrepreneurship. “Sometimes doing a business is not what you planned,” said the upbeat Jing as she described some of the ups and downs of her first year in business.

Where did you get the idea for your first business?

I was inspired by a soap-making class I took in San Francisco. I found the process itself spiritually satisfying.

What did you learn in your first year?

After attending the LA Gift Show, I learned that my target market was bridal and baby shower, not the broader 30 year old, female, organic Whole Foods customer. I am still learning the market in China.

What are your plans for the company?

I’m going to start giving soap-making classes. My big dream is to bring my version of the crafts ecommerce website Etsy to China.

How do you keep moving forward?

I keep two books with me all the time: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and Deepok Chopra’s Seven Spiritual Laws of Success.

Any thoughts to leave your fellow entrepreneurs with?

Pure potentiality. Just do it.
