FIDM Alumna Worked on Oscar-Nominated Film The Artist

Kaitlynn worked under the direction of  Production Designer Laurence Bennett and Set Decorator Robert Gould. She is the first Graduate from Entertainment Set Design & Decoration to receive an on screen credit for an Oscar nominated film in Art Direction.

FIDM Staff Member Curates L.A. Art Exhibition

FRecrafting-coverIDM Academic Researcher Ellen Caldwell has curated an art exhibition at Taylor De Cordoba in Culver City. Recrafting History: history, nostalgia & craft in the American memory features artists Eric Beltz, Jen Pack, Karen Spector, Frohawk Two Feathers, and Stephanie Washburn.

The exhibit is on view October 29, 2011 through December 22, 2011.

San Francisco Alumna's Gown Featured in California's Remarkable Women Exhibition

CRW1 The curator of The California Museum in Sacramento invited FIDM San Francisco Alumna Colleen Quen to be part of California's Remarkable Women, a new exhibition opening on October 10, 2011. Colleen's "Madame Butterfly" dress will be on display for the next year, along with her portrait and bio.

From farm worker organizer Dolores Huerta to astronaut Sally Ride to designer Ray Eames, the exhibit includes approximately 200 remarkable California women. Inspired by former First Lady Maria Shriver, the exhibit is presented in partnership with California State Parks.

FABULOUS! Exhibition at FIDM Museum & Galleries

2nd-article-ime FABULOUS! Ten Years of FIDM Museum Acquisitions, 2000-2010 is opening on September 13, 2011 at FIDM's Museum & Galleries. This exhibition will showcase an unprecedented array of dress and textile objects from FIDM's collection.

FABULOUS! celebrates the past decade of collecting at the FIDM Museum in Los Angeles. With a surge in extraordinary donations and purchases between 2000 and the present, the FIDM Museum collection has attained new eminence and richness, particularly in the areas of 19th– and 20th–century haute couture, mid–20th century American designers, and international contemporary designers.

The exhibition includes 175 donated and purchased garments and accessories worn by women, men, and children spanning 1800 to 2010. FABULOUS! highlights include: a white gauze French empire gown, a luxurious embroidered court suit worn by Austrian composer Johann Hummel (1778–1837), a Redfern court gown from 1907, and an Alexander McQueen couture gown from Fall/Winter 2008–09.

Exhibition categories include French Haute Couture, International contemporary designers, and Mid–20th century American designers. The exhibition catalogue (pictured) is for sale in the FIDM Museum Shop.

Graphic Design and Digital Media Alumni Network at LACMA

FIDM_Tim Burton_LACMA-1022 Ninety FIDM Graphic Design and Digital Media alumni met on Saturday, August 13th, for a networking picnic and tour of the Tim Burton retrospective at LA County Museum of Art (LACMA). Organized and hosted by Bill Cliatt and Carrie Shay of the FIDM Alumni Relations Office, the event was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon—networking with industry friends and viewing Burton's art. Chair Marlene Morbitt-Dunn and Directors Gene Le Brock and Steve Reaves were on hand to greet alumni.

New York Alumni Chapter Goes to McQueen Exhibit at the Met

Fifty Graduates of FIDM from the New York Alumni Chapter recently visited the Alexander McQueen exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "I was happy to see so many FIDM Alumni get together to experience the exhibit," says Alumna Rosa Ruffino. "The exhibit was very inspirational and reminded us all why we love fashion."

FIDM Instructor's Artwork To Be Featured Downtown

Artist, sculptor, and FIDM Jewelry Design Instructor Valerie Mitchell was chosen out of 15 district artists last month to design and create artwork that will be hung in Downtown Los Angeles, along Alameda from Third to Seventh streets, parts of Mateo and Palmetto streets, and Factory Place.

81 Through May, the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live is hosting an exhibition, "Graphic Guitar Designs That Rock," featuring custom-designed Fender® guitars created by FIDM Graphic Design Students.

FIDM Hollywood Exhibition Featured in L.A. Times

The L.A Times has a report from Saturday's preview of "The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" exhibition, which is now open to the public. On view are more than 100 costumes from 21 films, including Alice in Wonderland, True Grit, The King's Speech, and The Tempest, among others.
