Merchandise Product Development Grad Annie Hsu starts her new position at Jolt, a Kellwood company, this week--the same week she finishes her Professional Designation program on the L.A. campus. Here's how she did it!
What made you decide on the PD program at FIDM?
I graduated UC Davis in 2002 with a Business Management degree and have been working in various sales positions for nine years. When one of my jobs took me behind-the-scenes to a manufacturing setting, I fell in love with that environment. I liked the Professional Designation in Merchandise Product Development because I could get all the classes I needed and finish in one year.
What types of classes did you take?
Since I already had a business degree, I wanted classes to build my skills in Illustrator, Photoshop, and Trend Analysis. I do love analyzing numbers, so I enjoyed Merchandise Math. Most of the classes are an interesting blend of business and creativity.
Did you work during your year in the program?
I did two internships--one at bebe and the one at Kellwood that turned into a job offer.
Did you use the FIDM Career Center?
Career Advisor Kevin Keele was great; he helped me find the internships. I met with him every two weeks so he knew exactly what I was looking for. FIDM has an awesome Career Center, students just have to utilize it.
What will you be doing in your new position?
I will be coordinating sales, production, and design departments in Los Angeles for my boss who works out of San Francisco. I love the apparel industry and hope eventually to lead my own team.
