FIDM Alumna is Marketing Director for Menswear Retailer Clad Cavalier

This week, FIDM Merchandise Marketing Grad Samantha Zahn celebrated the launch of fashion retailer Clad Cavalier at a press event in Culver City. Samantha graduated in 2010, and she's now the Marketing Director and Buyer for the Los Angeles-based menswear retailer.

Tell us a little about yourself: I currently live just outside of Seattle, with a day job as the Marketing Manager for LevelUp, a tech startup, in Seattle. All of my extra time is spent on Clad Cavalier, planning, purchasing and allocating, as well as managing the marketing and publicity. Life is crazy, but I love it!

Where do you work? I work for two startups, LevelUp and Clad Cavalier. LevelUp is my day job. It's a new app that allows you to pay with your phone, and I manage all of the marketing efforts in Seattle. I am a co-owner, Buyer and Marketing Director of Clad Cavalier, a contemporary menswear retailer based in Los Angeles. The store is a collected effort of a handful of people with a goal of creating the new standard for men.

How did you decide on your major? I decided on my major at FIDM, because I am extremely Type A, super organized, and can crank out a spreadsheet in a second! I love marketing and the business side of any product, with a passion for the fashion industry.

How do you feel FIDM prepared you for what you’re doing now? Without FIDM, I would not have been prepared to help open a store or understand marketing or buying. I would't be qualified for any part of my job positions. FIDM taught me everything I need to know, inside and out.

Any advice for current FIDM Students? My advice for current students is to work and/or intern in an industry that you want to be in. I wanted to get into management, so I worked as a retail manager during my entire time at FIDM. It may be hard, but it's worth it to go into the workforce with experience and a good work ethic.

What is your biggest goal right now? My biggest goal is for the store to be successful! So…go shopping!
