FIDM Grads Featured in Oscars Designer Challenge 2010!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is inviting the public to vote on an element of its annual OscarĀ® telecast. Oscars Designer Challenge 2010 features nine up-and-coming fashion designers who are vying to have their original evening gown worn by one of the Awards escorts during the 82nd Academy Awards! The winning design will be announced during Oscars Red Carpet, the live arrivals show that will air on ABC beginning at 5 p.m. PT on March 7.

OscarĀ® fashion coordinator and FIDM Alumna Patty Fox and an advisory committee selected the designers, which includes FIDM Graduates Fernanda Carneiro, Oday Shakar, and Phong Hong. Public voting has begun for this exciting challenge and web series (hosted by Carson Kressley), which documents the competition and will be viewable on Oscar.com daily through March 8, 2010. In addition to having his or her winning design worn on the live telecast, the winning designer will receive two tickets to attend the Oscars ceremony, on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland!

Maria Shriver Tweets About FIDM to Her 466,567 Followers

On March 4, 2010, the California Museum is hosting A Free Day at the Museum in honor of Women's History Month. California First Lady Maria Shriver recently Tweeted about FIDM, saying:

"FIDM students designed posters for our free women's history month event at The California Museum in Sac...so talented!"

"Wow! We asked FIDM students to design posters for our free Day at The Museum event on 3/4 in Sac...beautiful! Please RT."

The First Lady of California is planning to visit the San Francisco campus to meet with FIDM Students and Instructors in the near future.

Just Accepted! Interview with Orange County Graphic Design Student Tyler Wise

Tyler2 Seventeen year-old FIDM Student Tyler Wise was recently accepted into the Graphic Design program and will begin attending classes at the Orange County campus this summer.

My ultimate philosophy is originality: come with it or get lost. No one wants to hear and see the same thing twice. We all have the power to change the world so give it your best shot.

New Interview With Fashion Design Student Andrew Stewart

10041j_Student Council Meeting_DSC_1185 Fashion Design Student Andrew Stewart knew he wanted to study fashion when he lived in Japan in high school and witnessed Harajuku style firsthand.

"The Career Center is great at helping students find jobs and internship opportunities. My goal is to work for JCPenney in the Design Training Program. JCPenney comes to FIDM occasionally to inform students of this program. I have my interview next month."

FIDM Students: Need Help Finding Scholarships?

FIDM's Scholarship Foundation will work one-on-one with you--at no charge--to uncover scholarship opportunities you may not know about. Located directly behind the Scholarship Store on the L.A. Campus, the Scholarship Foundation is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Additionally, there are 30 pages of researched scholarships posted on the Student Portal and this list is updated every week.  Students need only sign into the portal, click Finance, and click Scholarship Resources and they will be on the Scholarship page. You can actually apply for scholarships directly from the portal. "The Scholarship Foundation is always happy to assist with the application process," says Nicki Anderson of the Scholarship Foundation. As always, you don't need to make an appointment as walk-ins are welcome.

FIDM Alumna Works On Special T.V. Project for The White House

FIDM Graduate Marcie Booth, who is the Facilities and Operations Manager at The GRAMMY Museum at L.A. Live, recently worked on an exciting project for The White House, which was hosted by President and Mrs. Obama in honor of Black History Month. "It was truly a memory I won't forget anytime soon," says Marcie of In Performance at The White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement, a concert that recently aired on PBS. Look for Marcie's name in the end credits!

Fashion Design Student Joshua Christensen Wins Design Competition

Second quarter Fashion Design student Joshua Christensen won the 3rd Annual "Design for DEBUT's MC" competition sponsored by Student Activities.

Originally from Seattle, Christensen is currently a student at FIDM's Los Angeles Campus and has been sewing for over ten years.  He has an almost perfect grade point average and is planning to pursue a career designing menswear.

"I went for a masculine, modern military look," says Christensen of the silver two piece suit he created  for emcee Christian Moralde. This year's competition was especially competitive, with many high quality entries submitted to the Student Activities Center. 

Christensen's winning creation will be seen on Moralde at select 2010 FIDM DEBUT Runway Shows. Watch this space for photos of the winning ensemble!

Fashion Design Alumna Featured in Toronto Life

Tunic FIDM Fashion Design Alumna Sushma Kilachand moved to Toronto from Mumbai and began the Sushk label, featuring made-to-measure tunics, brocade shirts, ponchos, shawls, and more.

Monique Lhuillier Fall 2010

Monique Lhuillier 11 FIDM Grad Monique Lhuillier unveiled her Fall 2010 collection on Monday at New York Fashion Week, and the fashion world is buzzing about it.  The designer showed off pieces with a Far East influence, as well as the amazing evening gowns for which she is known.  See the runway show at FIDM's FashionClub.com.
